Body
The Florida First Generation Matching Grant (FGMG) is a state need-based grant for first-generation college students at eligible Florida institutions. Key facts about how it works:
- Funding comes from a state appropriation matched by donor contributions to SF.
- SF's annual pool is limited.
- The available amount is typically known after the fall semester begins, in late October.
Eligibility
To receive FGMG at SF, a student must:
- Be a Florida resident for tuition purposes
- Meet the federal definition of first-generation college student (neither parent earned a bachelor's degree, based on FAFSA responses about parental education)
- Have a completed FAFSA on file demonstrating substantial financial need
- Not have earned a prior bachelor's degree
- Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
- Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester in an eligible undergraduate program (per Florida Statute 1009.701)
- Be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress
- Not owe a repayment or be in default under any state or federal grant, loan, or scholarship program, unless satisfactory arrangements to repay have been made
First-generation status is set by FAFSA responses about parents' highest level of school completed. A student who appears to qualify but was not awarded should check those FAFSA answers.
Award Amount
Award amounts vary by state match, donor match, and student need. A student sees their FGMG award in the Financial Aid Portal [WEB LINK: eSantaFe login] once the aid offer is issued.
Renewal
FGMG is reviewed each year based on continued eligibility and FAFSA submission. Funding is limited, so whether a prior-year recipient is renewed depends on funding availability.
